Glaukos project participates to the first BBIimpact photo competition, whose aim is to collect high-quality photos highlighting the BBI JU’s positive impact on Europeans’ lives.
The funded projects were invited to celebrate their achievements through high-quality photos demonstrating the positive impact of the initiative on the environment and the European economy. Participants competed in five categories representing different aspects of BBI JU-funded projects:
- Bio-based production process
- Project results
- People in bio-based industries
- Impact of BBI JU
- Micro and macro photography
The following pictures were submitted for the competition for the category “Impact of BBI JU”.
Good for Pic not for Fish: “Even if those colourful nets and ropes are perfect for a stunning picture, fossil-based fishing nets endanger marine creatures. More than 640,000 tonnes of nets, lines, pots and traps used in commercial fishing are dumped and discarded in the sea every year, according to the United Nations (UN). Glaukos responds to sustainability challenges for the ocean’s protection by developing eco-designed and biodegradable biopolymers related to fishing gear and clothing, reducing the impact of plastic pollution in the marine environment.”
No more Plastic in my Boat: “Fishing is a traditional activity for many European countries and has not only an economic value, but also an emotional significance. Innovative bio-based products can revive the archaic and respectful connection between the human being and the environment. Glaukos responds to sustainability challenges for the ocean’s protection by developing eco-designed and biodegradable biopolymers related to fishing gear and clothing, reducing the impact of plastic pollution in the marine environment.”
Shadows of Fishing: “Plastics and microplastics are the dark, invisible side of the fishing and clothing industry, contributing to ocean pollution: one of the biggest challenges our society will have to address. In the picture, the human presence is only discernible by means of its shadow, the only thing marine creatures usually see of us. Glaukos responds to sustainability challenges for the ocean’s protection by developing eco-designed and biodegradable biopolymers related to fishing gear and clothing, reducing the impact of plastic pollution in the marine environment.
The three ocean guardians: “In this picture three seagulls critically observe a tangle of fossil-based fishing nets that pollute our oceans and jeopardize the marine life. One of the seagulls is eating a piece of plastic. Glaukos responds to sustainability challenges for the ocean’s protection by developing eco-designed and biodegradable biopolymers related to fishing gear and clothing, reducing the impact of plastic pollution in the marine environment.”
Walking on the plastic: “Everyday wildlife is forced to cope with the plastic that pollutes our seas and damage the marine ecosystem. Glaukos responds to sustainability challenges for the ocean’s protection by developing eco-designed and biodegradable biopolymers related to fishing gear and clothing, reducing the impact of plastic pollution in the marine environment.”
